Romy Kasper joins AG Insurance-NXTG for the 2023 season. The experienced German rider will fill the role of road captain. Sports director Jolien D’Hoore is thrilled about signing the 34-year-old rider.

“I’m very excited to start working with Romy. We’ve known each other for a long time riding together in the bunch. That’s why I knew she’s one of the best team captains in the bunch. She has the experience and the skills to always be at the right place at the right time. I’m sure that with her knowledge and strength she will add more depth to the team. Therefore, we couldn’t wish for a better team captain to guide our youngsters in the races on every kind of terrain.”

Kasper is one of the three experienced riders coming onboard. South African Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio and Lotta Henttala were already announced to join AG Insurance-NXTG in 2023. It’s the year where the team aims to step up to the highest level of racing, the Women’s World Tour, next to the existing U23 and U19 teams.

“I approached Jolien when I heard about the plans. This is a great project and I immediately felt that connection to team manager Natascha too, Kasper explains.

“I see how these riders grow every year. With Ashleigh, Lotta and me we have so much experience to share. I have done so many great things in my career, done World Championships and Olympics so I don’t have those big goals anymore but of course winning a race would still be nice, or guiding a teammate to a win. I especially love the spring races and Roubaix is my dream race to do again next year.”

Kasper started her career in 2008 and has been part of big teams like Boels-Dolmans, Alé-Cipollini and Jumbo-Visma ever since. She looks forward to helping the young riders on AG Insurance-NXTG make the next step.

“There is a lot of potential in the team. The next step is to learn them to save energy in races and get the very best out of their potential. That’s where I come in. I want to be the person they can ask all the questions they have. Of course, Jolien is in the car too but having someone next to you on the bike makes a big difference.

You can or lose a race by being in the right place at the right time but I am also thinking about eating, drinking and not stressing. If you have someone around you in the bunch to help with the decision-making in the race, it takes away a lot of stress and less stress is faster racing.”

AG Insurance-NXTG has now announced 14 riders for the 2023 elite team. The last two remaining riders will be announced in the next weeks.
